The San Blas Islands sit just off the Caribbean coast of Panama – an area of dense tropical jungle that is, more or less,
uninhabitable due to insects and other nuisances, and so the Kunas choose to inhabit the beautiful islands just of the coast.Living on these islands is picturesque, but there is no source of clean water
available on the islands … despite being surrounded by water on all sides. Kuna women must travel, by motorized dugout, to the mainland and then hike up to the top of a small hill in order to fill their water
buckets to take back to the islands. Floating Bible Schools is busy with projects to get fresh water to islands to increase the hygiene conditons to prevent spread of disease and help Kuna babies live
to grow. While we take clean water as a given, with the twist of a faucet tap, up until now, the Kunas have had to plan a rigorous journey to get just the basic amount needed. |
